I have had the pleasure of working with thousands of sales people in my life. Sales Reps, Sales Managers, Sales Directors both account managers and business development professionals. In that, I have uncovered one key characteristic in all highly successful sales professionals.
They are insatiable.
Insatiably curious
Insatiably hungry
Insatiably grateful

The most successful sales people ask fantastic questions. They are genuinely curious about the people they interact with. Their quest for understanding (not knowledge, not attention, not airtime, etc.), but their insatiable desire to truly understand their customer, their motivators, their problems, their pain points, their business, and their goals is clear. Their questions are sincere, they’re authentic, meaningful to the situation, and offer a great deal of compassion to their quest of seeking to understand.
Highly successful sales people are insatiably hungry. They are not satisfied with the status quo. They want more for themselves, their customers, their company, their families, and the world around them. They are persistent and display disproportionate amounts of grit and determination compared to their peers.
When you feel the gratitude exuding from a sales rep, you know that you have a rare breed in your presence. What does that mean? The most talented and accomplished sales professionals are the ones that are a bit like therapists. They have a skill and ability to make you feel things. They guide you through your projects and goals and help you uncover what the real pain points and hurdles are in your business. They form a human-to-human connection that no marketing tactic like newsletters, paid advertising or tradeshow booth can ever accomplish. So when they are truly grateful, you not only know it…you feel it. Successful professionals know the power of gratitude in their own lives, and when they emote and share it with you, it’s about as close as you can get to a ‘silver bullet’ as you can get.
In a world in which “money” is Googled 5-times more often than “happiness”, and the 3-step plan to making more money and losing weight inundates our world. Adopting the “Be Insatiable” mantra is about as close to the silver bullet to success in sales as you can get.
“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” – Pablo Picasso.
